ASISSE 2024-25: NSO’s First Survey of Formal Service Firms
Why in the news
For the first time, India has started a yearly survey of registered service companies, filling a long-standing data gap in its biggest economic sector.

- Conducted by: National Statistical Office (NSO) under MoSPI.
- Coverage: trade, IT, transport, hospitality, education, health and professional services.
- Sample: 2.1 million (21 lakh) enterprises in all States and UTs.
- Sampling frame: GSTN database, anchoring results in real tax-paying entities.
- Mode: 100% digital, via a secure web portal.
- Legal basis: Collection of Statistics Act, 2008.
| Survey | Sector covered |
|---|---|
| ASI | Manufacturing, i.e. factories |
| ASUSE | Small informal, unincorporated enterprises |
| ASISSE (new) | Formal, incorporated service firms: companies and LLPs |
Background
- Earlier, India had annual figures for factories but no regular health check on registered service firms such as IT hubs, hospitals and hotels.
- Incorporated means registered under the Companies Act or as an LLP; such firms form the formal economy’s backbone, add to GST and offer organised jobs.
- Tracking them apart from unincorporated units helps measure the pace of formalisation.
- Reliable data on these firms supports Gross Value Added (GVA) calculation.
Jan Vishwas link
The Jan Vishwas Act, 2023 decriminalised some minor procedural lapses, so firms can report data without fear of harsh penalties for honest errors, helping ease of doing business.
