Background
- The Research Quality pillar rests on citation impact, meaning how often researchers elsewhere cite a university’s papers.
- Some older IITs had earlier stayed away from THE rankings, objecting to transparency and to the weight on international outlook (foreign students and faculty).
Concerns
- India shows a gap between quantity and quality: wide presence but a stagnant elite tier.
- Better research quality and international collaboration are needed beyond IISc, including at IITs and JNU.
Exam angle
- Report: THE Asia University Rankings 2026; leader Tsinghua University.
- India’s best: IISc Bengaluru at 43rd.
- Related term: citation impact under Research Quality.
