Sustainable Transport Mission Joins NAPCC Climate Plan
Why in the news
The Government decided to include a new transport mission in the National Action Plan on Climate Change.
Key facts
- Covers roads, railways, ports, shipping and civil aviation, to cut emissions and follow international standards where available.
- Transport gives about 10% of GHG emissions; road transport makes up 87-90% of it and about one-third of urban air pollution.
- No global net-zero roadmap for roads, so India needs its own plan: Bharat VII norms (aligned with Euro VII), alternative fuels, EV push.
- 73% of freight goes by road; shifting to rail needs structural fixes.
| EV charging | Figure |
|---|---|
| Chargers per EV | 1 per 135 (global 1 per 6-20) |
| Target | 30% EV penetration by 2030 |
| Stations needed | About 3.9 million (12,000 now) |
Concerns
- Most chargers use fossil-fuel power; renewable charging is essential.
Exam angle
- Framework: NAPCC; norms: Bharat VII.
