About Luxembourg’s monarchy
Luxembourg is a grand duchy, so its head of state carries the title Grand Duke. Henri himself took over in 2000 when his father Jean stepped aside, so a voluntary handover is now a recent tradition in the country. Henri is married to Maria Teresa Mestre and has five children.
