A CSIR laboratory in Pulwama, J&K, made honey drawn mainly from lavender nectar for the first time, placing India beside France, Spain, Italy, Bulgaria, England and Turkey in this premium segment.
Key facts
- Mono-floral: at least 80% nectar from one flower, giving distinct taste, aroma and medicinal value.
- Verification: 61% lavender pollen; checked by fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy.
- Hives are placed near lavender farms so bees collect mainly its nectar.
Purple Revolution
- Lavender came to Kashmir in the 1970s from Bulgaria; farming expanded sharply after 2014 to 750 hectares.
- Over 3,000 families, including women of Self Help Groups, are trained in farming and beekeeping.
- Benefits: repels pests, aids pollination of apple and plum orchards, brings high-value returns.
