Living Root Bridges Nominated for UNESCO World Heritage Status

India formally filed Meghalaya’s Living Root Bridges with UNESCO for assessment in the 2026-27 World Heritage cycle, under the name Jingkieng Jri / Lyu Chrai Cultural Landscape.
About the bridges
- Called Jingkieng Jri locally.
- Footbridges made by training the aerial roots of live trees across gaps.
- A form of living bio-engineering, where nature and human knowledge develop together.
- Unlike ordinary bridges they strengthen with age and can survive several centuries.
Where
- Meghalaya, mainly East Khasi Hills and West Jaintia Hills.
