Why in the news

On 12 January 2026 the sports ministry (MYAS) issued rules under the National Sports Governance Act, 2025, binding national sports bodies and regional federations to athlete voice, clean elections and ethical administration in line with Olympic Charter norms.

SOM eligibility and tiers

  • Minimum age 25 years and must have retired from active sport.
  • A gap of at least a year from selection-level competition before applying.
  • A 10-tier system ranks SOMs by achievement, from Olympic and Paralympic medallists down to National Games and National Championship medallists.
