Jharkhand GI Tags: Bhagaiya Silk, Kuchai Silk, Munda Jewellery
Why in the news
Four traditional crafts of Jharkhand have been officially recognised with Geographical Indication status. The tags are expected to help tribal artisans earn more and guard their work from imitation.
The four products

About GI tags
- An intellectual property sign for goods whose qualities or reputation come essentially from their place of origin.
- Governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
- Applies to agricultural and manufactured goods.
- Examples named: Champagne, Roquefort cheese, Tequila, Darjeeling Tea, Kanchipuram Silk.
About Tussar silk
- One of four silk types in India: Mulberry, Tussar, Eri and Muga.
- Also called Tasar or Kosa; produced by Antheraea mylitta on Sal, Asan and Arjun trees.
- Main states: Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal.
Munda community and Jharkhand
- Munda: among India’s largest tribal groups, speaking Mundari (Austroasiatic family), roughly 2 million people.
- Birsa Munda (1875-1900), freedom fighter; his birth anniversary, 15 November, is Janjatiya Gaurav Divas.
- Jharkhand: formed 15 November 2000 out of Bihar; capital Ranchi; about 26% tribal; major tribes Santhal, Munda, Oraon, Ho, Kharia.
