Rising security threats in West Asia prompted the Government to start a safety programme for Indian crew working in conflict-prone waters.
Key facts
- Launched by: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal; nodal ministry: Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW).
- Trigger: strikes on the ships MT Al Bahiyah and MT Mombasa near Hormuz, which touched 30 Indian seafarers out of a crew of 46.
- Goal: protect lives, welfare and rights via live tracking and emergency response.
