Bima Sugam: insurance marketplace products due by September 2026
Why in the news
At National Insurance Awareness Day in Mumbai (organised by the Life Insurance Council) on 30 June 2026, IRDAI Chairman Ajay Seth gave a timeline for Bima Sugam. First products should be available by end-September 2026, and a consultation paper on distribution reforms is due by end-July 2026.

- Bima Sugam: an “Amazon-like” digital insurance marketplace that places insurers, intermediaries and customers on one interface.
- Website: launched in September 2025.
- Priority products: motor, health and term life.
- Cost angle: low costs expected, as the platform does not need high commissions; a modest fee may apply.
- Implementing entity: Bima Sugam India Federation, with authorised capital of ₹500 crore and paid-up capital of about ₹310 crore; shareholding is spread across life, general and health insurers.

FDI in insurance
- The Insurance Amendment Bill 2025 permitted 100% FDI, raised from the earlier 74%.
- Foreign insurers can now enter without an Indian joint-venture partner.
- IRDAI has cleared one fully foreign-owned general insurance licence; another is being processed, and one life insurance application has been received.
- KIWI General Insurance (backed by Westbridge Capital) was approved.
- QBE of Australia is buying 51% of Raheja QBE from Prism Johnson for ₹324 crore.
- Mahindra Group and Canada’s Manulife plan a 50:50 life insurance JV, ₹3,600 crore from each side.
- Prudential plc is acquiring 75% of Bharti Life Insurance while trimming its stake in ICICI Prudential Life.
- Angel One is preparing a digital-first life venture with LivWell.
Seth added that insurers should go for IPOs only when capital is genuinely needed, not just for transparency.
