Zhu Rongji, a former Premier of China and a key architect of its market-oriented reforms, died in Beijing on 12 August 2026 at the age of 97 after an illness.

Legacy
He is often called the chief engineer of China’s economic reform. His enterprise restructuring also caused worker protests, and regions such as the industrial northeast struggled to recover. He also managed Beijing’s response to the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98.
