Why in the news
Senior IPoS officer Dr Vinaya Prakash Singh was returned unopposed as head of the Asian-Pacific Postal Union for another four years.
About APPU
- APPU: intergovernmental body of 32 member countries in Asia-Pacific; headquarters Bangkok (shifted from Manila in 2002).
- Status: a regional Restricted Union created under Article 8 of the UPU Constitution.
- Purpose: better postal ties, coordinated cross-border logistics and rules, technical cooperation and modernisation.
- Formed 1 April 1962 (Asian-Oceanic Postal Union); renamed by a Yogyakarta convention on 27 March 1981, effective 1 July 1982.
About the UPU and India Post
- UPU (Universal Postal Union): set up 1874 under the Treaty of Bern; based at Berne; UN agency since 1948; India joined 1876.
- India Post: world’s largest network, 1.5 lakh+ post offices, roughly 90% rural.
