Why in the news

Researchers in Odisha examined how weather and environment shape melioidosis and produced a state-wide risk map.

About melioidosis

  • Cause: the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, entering by inoculation, inhalation or ingestion of contaminated soil or water.
  • Range: mild skin infection to severe sepsis; up to 50% fatal in septicaemia.
  • Diagnosis: hard, because of long incubation and likeness to Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
  • Treatment: intravenous antibiotics, then a 12-20 week eradication phase.

Scope2015-2023; 144 cases; 3,024 days of weather data
OutputRisk map on 10 km grids
High-risk districtsCuttack, Balasore, Khordha, Jajpur
  • Cases follow temperature, rainfall, cloud cover and solar radiation.
  • Urbanisation, poor sanitation and changing rainfall may shift spread.
  • Weather analytics should feed disease surveillance; the method can be replicated elsewhere.

Exam angle

  • Organism: Burkholderia pseudomallei.
  • South Asia’s share of global cases: 44%.

Test yourself

1. Which bacterium causes melioidosis?

Melioidosis is caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei.

2. What share of global melioidosis cases does South Asia account for, per The Lancet (2016)?

South Asia, including India, has 44% of the 165,000 yearly cases.

3. Which institutions conducted the Odisha study linking climate to melioidosis?

AIIMS Bhubaneswar (Microbiology) and IIT Bhubaneswar (Climate Sciences) ran it.
