Why in the news

On 28 October 2026, ISRO said it will launch the navigation satellite NVS-03 aboard GSLV-F18 on 30 October at 11:51 PM from the Second Launch Pad of Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.

Key facts

ParameterDetail
Launch vehicleGSLV-F18 (20th GSLV flight)
Satellite massAbout 2,250 kg
Initial orbitGeosynchronous transfer orbit, 170 km x 37,023 km
Final orbitGeostationary
SignalsNew L1, plus existing L5 and S
  • NVS-03 is the third satellite of the Next Generation Navigation Satellite System, which continues the IRNSS series.
  • It carries an indigenous atomic clock along with procured clocks.
  • The launch should raise working NavIC satellites to the minimum needed to restore standalone positioning and timing services, as some older satellites have reached end of life.
  • NVS-02 (January 2025) reached its initial orbit but could not climb to its final slot. A panel led by former ISRO chief A.S. Kiran Kumar found that an ignition signal failed to reach a pyro valve on the main engine’s oxidiser line.

About NavIC

NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) is India’s own regional system giving position, velocity and timing services over India and about 1,500 km beyond. It offers a Standard Positioning Service and a Restricted Service. ISRO plans five second-generation satellites, NVS-01 to NVS-05. NVS-01 was launched on GSLV-F12 on 29 May 2023 and was the first to carry an indigenous atomic clock.

Exam angle

  • NVS-03 rides GSLV-F18; launch pad: Second Launch Pad, Sriharikota.
  • NVS-02 failure probe: committee under A.S. Kiran Kumar.
  • NavIC coverage: India plus about 1,500 km.

Test yourself

1. Which launch vehicle will carry the NVS-03 navigation satellite on 30 October 2026?

ISRO scheduled NVS-03 on GSLV-F18, the 20th flight of the GSLV.

2. NavIC's primary service area covers India and a region of about how many kilometres beyond its boundary?

NavIC covers the Indian landmass and about 1,500 km beyond India's boundary.

3. Which new navigation signal does NVS-03 add to the existing L5 and S signals?

NVS-03 introduces an L1 signal alongside the L5 and S band signals.
