Form-7 limits: Election Commission caps objections per elector
Why in the news
The Election Commission of India has capped the number of Form-7 applications an individual elector can file, to stop bulk objections. It conveyed this to the Chief Electoral Officers of states and UTs, as reported on 10 October 2026.
Key facts
- Claims-and-objections period: a maximum of 10 Form-7 applications per elector.
- Continuous updation: a maximum of five applications per month.
- The caps apply to online and offline filing alike.
- Who can file: only a person whose name already appears on the roll of that constituency.
- False objections: if the ERO finds a complaint false or fabricated, action must be started against the applicant for knowingly making a false written statement.
| Phase | Limit per elector |
|---|---|
| Claims and objections period | 10 applications (total) |
| Continuous updation of rolls | 5 applications per month |
About Form 7
Under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, any objection to the inclusion of a name in a constituency’s electoral roll, or any request to delete a name, must be made in Form 7. The Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) examines and decides these applications under the same rules. The new caps target misuse through mass objections that could lead to wrongful deletion of voters.
