About FPI debt routes

FPI investment in Indian debt is tracked under three channels. Under the General route, the RBI kept FY2026-27 caps unchanged at 6% of outstanding central government securities, 2% of state government securities and 15% of corporate bonds. The Fully Accessible Route (FAR) covers specified securities with no investment cap. From 1 April 2026, investments under the Voluntary Retention Route (VRR) also count against General route limits.

Exam angle

  • Net equity flow = secondary market flow plus primary market flow (−45,126 + 960 = −44,166).
  • Know the three debt routes: General Limit, FAR and VRR, and the 6%/2%/15% General route caps.
  • A strong dollar and higher US yields usually draw foreign money away from emerging markets like India.
