Why in the news

Data from the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) show that e-way bill generation reached a record 141.53 million in September 2026, crossing the 140 million mark for the first time.

Key facts

  • Annual growth: up 7.21% over September last year.
  • Monthly growth: up 1.75% from August’s 139.08 million.
  • Previous record: 140.6 million in March.
  • Threshold: an e-way bill is required for moving goods valued above Rs 50,000; it records the goods, consignor, consignee and transporter.
  • Tax experts read the jump as a sign of steady domestic trade, wider formalisation under GST and possibly early festive demand.

About the e-way bill and GST Council proposals

The e-way bill is an electronic document used under GST to track movement of goods. At its October 8 meeting, the GST Council proposed limiting roadside checks: vehicles could be stopped only on specific information with approval of an officer of joint commissioner rank or above, and only in the supplier’s or buyer’s state. Action would still be possible anywhere if no e-way bill exists. Confiscation of goods or vehicles in transit would end.

Exam angle

  • Remember: 141.53 million, 7.21% growth, Rs 50,000 threshold.
  • Previous record: 140.6 million in March.
  • Note the GST Council’s October 8 proposals to curb roadside checks.
