About Open Market Operations
OMOs are purchases and sales of government securities by the RBI, used to adjust rupee liquidity on a durable basis. When liquidity is in surplus, RBI sells securities, which drains money from the system. When liquidity is tight, it buys securities to inject funds. E-Kuber is the RBI’s Core Banking Solution platform, on which it runs G-sec auctions.
Exam angle
- OMO sale = liquidity absorption; OMO purchase = liquidity injection.
- Remember the figures: ₹25,000 crore, six securities, auction on October 13, settlement on October 14.
- E-Kuber is RBI’s Core Banking Solution platform used for G-sec auctions.
- The auction was multi-security, with no security-wise notified amount.
