World Development Report 2026 on AI Launched in India by World Bank
Why in the news
The World Bank Group’s World Development Report (WDR) 2026, titled The Promise of Artificial Intelligence, was launched in India on 8 October 2026 at The Oberoi, New Delhi. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw delivered the keynote and formally presented the report.
Key facts
- Organisers: the IndiaAI Mission under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), together with the World Bank Group.
- Adopt, adapt, advance: the report’s framework asks countries to first adopt AI, tailor it to local needs, and only then advance it, instead of spending billions on frontier systems from scratch.
- Core message: developing countries should be optimistic, strategic and pragmatic about AI.
- Foundations needed: reliable electricity and connectivity, computing infrastructure, quality data, skills and capable institutions.
- Preparedness gap: just one of the world’s 25 low-income countries has published a national AI strategy; those that stand to gain most may be least prepared.
- Jobs: the risk of AI-driven job disruption is less imminent in developing countries.
