Why in the news

Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh announced progress under the National Quantum Mission (NQM) at Pragatisheel Q-Foundry 2026 in New Delhi on 30 September 2026. The Ministry of Science and Technology issued the release.

Key facts

  • 1,000 km of quantum-secure communication has been achieved in about three years; the mission aims for 2,000 km over eight years.
  • Supported quantum start-ups increased from 17 to 26.
  • Ten new quantum technologies were launched, and about 52 technologies are being developed at various Technology Readiness Levels.
  • Four thematic hubs bring together 152 researchers from 43 institutions across 17 states and 2 Union Territories.

About the National Quantum Mission

The mission works in four domains: quantum computing, quantum communication, quantum sensing and metrology, and quantum materials and devices. The Pragatisheel Q-Foundry initiative supports partnerships and the adoption of indigenous technology.

Exam angle

  • Remember the progress against the target: 1,000 km of 2,000 km, about half the goal in under half the time.
  • Learn the four NQM domains and the four hub institutions.
  • Quantum communication uses quantum properties to secure data transmission.

Test yourself

1. How much quantum-secure communication has India achieved under the National Quantum Mission?

About 1,000 km was achieved in roughly three years, against a 2,000 km eight-year target.

2. How many quantum start-ups are now supported after the latest additions?

Support rose from 17 start-ups to 26 after 9 more were added.

3. How many thematic hubs operate under the NQM?

Four thematic hubs are at IISc Bangalore, IIT Madras, IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi.
