Andaman Sea offshore mineral blocks: first auction to be launched
Why in the news
The Ministry of Mines announced on 30 September 2026 that it will launch the first auction of offshore mineral blocks in the Andaman Sea on 1 October 2026.

- Two offshore mineral blocks are offered in the first phase.
- The blocks are to be awarded as composite licences.
- Minerals of interest: cobalt, nickel, manganese, copper and rare earth elements.
- Legal basis: the Offshore Areas Mineral (Development and Regulation) Act, 2002 and the Offshore Areas Mineral (Auction) Rules, 2024.
- A 2023 amendment to the Act let the Centre allot offshore blocks through transparent, competitive auctions.
About the initiative
The move is meant to strengthen mineral security and support industries such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, advanced electronics and strategic sectors. The government expects systematic exploration, more private investment, new technology use and stronger critical-mineral supply chains.
